Victorian Brett Coletta has taken a major step towards playing on the PGA TOUR in 2020 following a roller-coaster final round at the Korn Ferry Tour’s TPC Colorado Championship in Colorado.

Tied for the lead entering the final round, Coletta got off to the worst possible start when he made a three-putt double bogey 7 at the par-5 opening hole and then dropped further behind when his putter again failed him, three-putting the fifth hole for a bogey 6.

Showing tremendous resilience, the 23-year-old bounced back with a birdie at the par-4 sixth and made the turn at 1-over after adding a second birdie at the par-4 ninth.

With Argentine Nelson Ledesma experiencing his own topsy-turvy front nine Coletta put himself back into contention with a birdie at the 12th hole and then grabbed a share of the lead with a regulation birdie at the par-4 17th.

But with the tournament at stake it was Ledesma who produced under pressure, making birdie at the 72nd hole courtesy of a lengthy birdie putt to win by a shot and move up to fourth in the moneylist.

Coletta’s runner-up finish not only netted him a very healthy cheque for $US64,800 ($A92,362) but a 41-spot leap up the order of merit into 25th position, the top 25 at season’s end earning a ticket to the PGA TOUR in 2020.

It was an eventful week in more ways than one for Coletta whose opening round of 4-under 68 was highlighted by an ace at the par-3 16th while his third round of 7-under 65 featured a run of six birdies in the space of seven holes on the back nine, culminating with a chip-in birdie at the 17th.

Rhein Gibson solidified his place inside the top 10 on the Order of Merit with a tie for 16th while Jamie Arnold was tied for 19th after spending much of the week inside the top 10 on the leaderboard.

Cameron Davis was the pick of the Aussies on the PGA TOUR this week but his tie for 53rd at the John Deere Classic actually sent him backwards in the FedEx Cup standings.

Set up by an eagle on the second hole in his first round, Davis made a promising start at TPC Deere Run, posting a 5-under 66 to be well-placed through 18 holes.

But on a course that traditionally gives up plenty of low scores the rookie New South Welshman gradually fell down the leaderboard despite being under par in each of his remaining three rounds.

One of only two Aussies to qualify for the weekend, Davis fell two spots to be 169th in the FedEx Cup and well outside the top 125 who advance to the playoff series.
