Amateur Brett Coletta continues to impress with a course
record equalling round at the NSW Open.

Playing his first tournament since winning the Isuzu Queensland Open, Coletta has proven he has serious game firing 10-under 62 in the first round of the NSW Open.

This equals the Stonecutters Ridge course record set by Rohan Blizard and Aaron Wilkin during the first round of the tournament last year.

"Oh I didn’t know that! I had about six foot on the last and it lipped out but none the less it was a great round," said Coletta, who missed a birdie putt on his final hole to claim the record outright.

"It was all a blur at the start then all of a sudden I was 7-under after 9 holes. There were some great shots that I hit out there, it was almost flawless golf.

"I played exactly to my game plan, hit to the spots I wanted to and holed my fair share of putts which usually equals a good score.

Still happy with his decision to stay amateur, Coletta is once again leading the Tour Pros with Rory Bourke and David Bransdon one shot behind. 

"If I had 2-over I would be the same. It’s a decision that I made and definitely I am 100% backing my decision," added Coletta, who says he is playing without the pressure of expectation.

"I try not to have any expectations, it’s hard not to but I thought  if I come out and play like I did at the Queensland Open then I am going to have a huge chance.

"I backed myself in, I played really well and the scores show that."

Playing alongside 2015 PGA Tour of Australasia Player of the Year Matthew Millar and four time PGA TOUR winner Robert Allenby, Coletta enjoyed the experience and despite beating them by two and eight shots respectively, felt he learned from the seasoned Tour Pros.

"I played with Rob and Matt. I was very impressed with Matt’s game; I haven’t played with him before. Obviously Rob is a notoriously great player and has earned a lot of money in his time," added Coletta.

"We all had a great experience out there. I was asking them questions and they were asking questions back. It was good for my career moving forward to get some answers.

"It reassured for me what the Tour Pros do and the process they go through."

Tied 4th on 8-under the card are Anthony Houston and Matthew Millar. They were joined by Deyen Lawson and Ben Clementson who fired the best rounds of the afternoon field.

Rhein Gibson, Matthew Guyatt, amateur Luke Toomey, Chris Gaunt, Peter Wilson, Lindsay Wilson, Anthony Brown, Adam Blyth and Jake Higginbottom rounding out the top-10 on 7-under the card.

The second round of the NSW Open tees off at 6.45am at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club with Coletta on course at 12.45pm.
