Steven Bowditch has got his 2014/15 PGA TOUR season off to an almost perfect start with a runner-up finish at the Fry’s.com Open.
The Queenslander, who claimed his maiden victory at the Texas Open in March, got off to a slow start with a 1-over 73 in the first round but caught fire over the weekend with back to back rounds of 67.
Bowditch finished two shots behind winner Sang Moon Bae having begun the day in a share of 14th place.
A rejuvenated Robert Allenby also had a good week posting his best result since the 2012 season with a T8 finish.
The highlight of the week for the four time TOUR winner was a third round 66 to go with rounds of 70-71 and 70 to finish 11-under for the tournament, four behind Bae.
Allenby claimed the last available card for this year’s TOUR finishing 125th on the 2013/14 FedEx Cup points list but is off to a flying start to this season.
Graduating from the Web.com Tour Cameron Percy can be pleased with his first event back on the main TOUR.
A disappointing 73 on Sunday dropped him nine places on the leader board but there was plenty to like about his opening three rounds of 69-70-70.
This is Percy’s third full time tour of duty on the main TOUR and he has already said he expects to perform better than past attempts as he feels more confident and comfortable with his game.
Aaron Baddeley finished a shot back from Percy though the most impressive performance of the week belonged to Jarrod Lyle.
After pre qualifying for the tournament via an eight man playoff Lyle not only made the cut but was under par three of the four rounds to finish 5-under for the week and T31.
"To come here without a tournament to play, and then get through on the Monday (qualifier) and make the cut and play reasonable golf for four days, I couldn’t ask for anything better," he told PGATOUR.com.
"It’s something to build on for the rest of the year."
Lyle will also tee up this week in the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children Open where he has been extended a sponsor’s invite.
Marc Leishman (T46) and Stuart Appleby (T65) were the only other Australians to make the cut with Matt Jones and Mathew Goggin both missing the weekend’s play.
