Ryan Fox is the leading Australasian heading in to the final round of the 99th PGA Championship after a bizarre third round at Quail Hollow.
Jason Day looked to have picked up where he left off after a stellar 5-under 66 in round two with a birdie on the second before things went quickly south.
Bogeys on 3 and 9 were followed by a double on 12 and another bogey on 13 thanks to some wayward driving from the Queenslander.
Three consecutive birdies looked to have steadied the ship including another 40ft putt on the 16th before another bogey on 17 and a perplexing couple of decisions on the 18th.
After yet another disappointing drive, Day found the trees to the right of the 18th fairway, rather than play it safe by hitting directly on to the fairway and settle for a likely bogey or double, Day decided to go further right in a decision clear only to himself.
He found more trouble next to a grandstand and would eventually go for 8 on the par 4 hole effectively erasing all his hard work from the second round. He’s now T16.
Kiwi Ryan Fox in stark contrast kept a level head and shot an even round 71 to remain at 1-under par and T12, only six shots back from leader Kevin Kisner on 7-under par.
Victorian Marc Leishman too shot an even round to stay at 4-over and Adam Scott’s tough week continued with 4-over to blow out to 8-over after three rounds.
Play resumes tomorrow with Scott the first of the four remaining Australasian’s teeing off at 10:35pm AEST. Live coverage begins on Fox Sports Australia from 3am AEST.
