Matthew Ballard and former US PGA Tour star Michael Sim have today added their names to one of the PGA’s more historic trophies, after taking out the 2015 Club Car Queensland PGA Foursomes Championship.
Starting the day as one of the favourites, Ballard and Sim were quick to get out of the gates, holding a one shot lead after the opening 18 holes with a 4-under 66. They continued to set the pace early in the afternoon, though a number of late bogies would not assure them of victory.
Trainee Professionals Anna Stanton and Jade Fisher were lurking only one shot behind heading into the final 18 and when they posted a second consecutive 3-under 67, it looked as though history could be made as they held the Clubhouse lead at 6-under alongside Tim Hart and Chris Wood.
Unfortunately it would be one shy of the winning total, as Ballard and Sim held it together on their final hole to post a final round 3-under 67 for a one stroke win after finishing at 7-under.
After finishing third last year, both Ballard and Sim were pleased to have their named etched in PGA history alongside previous winners Ian Baker-Finch and Peter Senior. "It is great to have our names alongside some of the all time greats of Australian Golf," said Ballard following his round.
"Although it’s never easy playing foursomes, it certainly helps when you have so much trust in your playing partner. Michael played great out there today and although we tried hard to lose it over the final few holes, it was certainly his form on the course that was the catalyst behind our victory here today."
It has been the year of first’s for female trainee’s following on from Alexandra Orchard’s win at the Pampling Plate earlier in the year, with Anna Stanton and Jade Fisher becoming the first all female combination to claim the Qld Trainee Foursomes Championship. Although happy with their day, the pair will no doubt rue the opportunity they had to become the first female winners of the open Qld PGA Foursomes Championship, after making an astonishing 13 birdies over the 36 holes.
This year would also see the inaugural Qld Senior PGA Foursomes staged, with Mark Tickle and Ossie Moore securing victory with a six over par 76. The duo were honoured with being crowned the inaugural winners, with the win adding to Moore’s collection, which includes the QLD PGA Championship and the QLD Senior PGA Championship.
Professionals are now enjoying the hospitality of the Howeston Pro-Am today, with the event celebrating its 36th anniversary.
