In its six year history no Australian has ever won the Web.com Tour’s Colombia Championship but the eight teeing up this week at the Bogota Country Club will be looking to change that.
Colombia has proved a difficult venue for Australians historically, none of those playing this week managing a top-10 between them.
Peter Lonard’s T13 in 2012, when he led after an opening round 66 but struggled at the weekend, is the highlight of the group but all will be looking to improve this week.
With the season just one event old it’s difficult to gauge form but there were positive signs for some of the Australians last week in Panama.
Bryden Macpherson played soild golf the first three rounds and despite a disappointing Sunday will take a lot of positives from the week.
Likewise Bret Drewitt was good for 54 of the 72 holes, only a Saturday 74 ruining what could otherwise have been a top-20 result.
Steve Allan fired his best score of the tournament in the final round last week, a 2-under 68 that was in the top third of the field for the day, so will begin this week on a positive.
Lonard also returns this week after a disappointing missed cut in Panama but has at least some good memories of the course.
The remaining Australians listed in the field are Greg Chalmers, Oliver Goss, Scott Gardiner and Mathew Goggin.
Having withdrawn last week with an elbow injury Goggin may not tee up but the others have little form to suggest a big performance this week.
Chalmers makes his debut at the tournament, Goss missed the cut in his only other appearance here and Gardiner is playing the year on a medical extension after a lengthy break from the game.
