There are already 11 Australians booked to
play the game’s oldest Major next week but all four would dearly love to make
their way into the field.
The performance of Greg Chalmers last week,
who grabbed a spot at Troon with his victory at the PGA TOUR’s Barracuda
Championship, will be an encouragement to all four as they tackle a layout that
is yet to see an Australian winner.
Six Australians tee up this week in
Scotland, Nathan Holman and Scott Hend already assured a place at Troon next
week.
This is the fourth time Castle Stuart has
hosted the Scottish national championship with Richard Green, Andrew Dodt and
Brett Rumford all playing each of the previous three.
Rumford and Dodt are yet to make the
weekend in three tries while Green has made the cut in each but has a best
finish of T24 in 2012.
Jason Scrivener is playing the tournament
for the first time but has been struggling with his game since the BMW PGA
Championship in May.
Nathan Holman is also a first time starter
in the event and makes his debut after being in the field for last week’s WGC
Bridgestone Invitational in the US.
While an opening 77 was a disappointing
start at the difficult Firestone course, Holman improved each day in Ohio and
his final round 69 was among the better scores on Sunday.
