Thirty-five years after his triumph Michael Clayton remains the only Australian to win the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in Korea, a slice of history seven Aussies are hoping to share this week at Namseoul Country Club.

Now in its third year as an Asian Tour event, this year marks the 38th hosting of the GS Caltex Maekyung Open yet it is not an event in which Australians have enjoyed much success.

Clayton’s win in 1984 is the only one by an Australian in the history of the tournament while Kiwi Eddie Lee was the champion whilst still an amateur in 2002.

The closest an Australian has come to matching Clayton’s feat were runner-up finishes in 2000 (Kim Felton) and in 2015 when Jason Norris and Kiwis Ryan Fox and Gareth Paddison all finished two strokes back from winner Moon Kyong-jun.

Norris has returned in 2019 to try and go one better and is joined in the field by Terry Pilkadaris, Travis Smyth, Jake Higginbottom, Andrew Dodt, Junseok Lee, Doeun An and New Zealander Ben Campbell.
