2013 was a great year for Australian golf. But could 2014 be even bigger?
2013 was a great year for Australian golf. But could 2014 be even bigger?
With the golf year already underway, check out who we’ll be watching in season 2014.
Matt is a world class player who has established himself on the PGA TOUR in 2013 finishing 37th on the FedExCup. For Jones 2014 will be all about getting the recognition he deserves. Finishing tied 6th at the Emirates Australian Open he sent plenty of tongues wagging with many believing he will be Australia’s next winner on the PGA TOUR.
Scott had a phenomenal year on the Asian Tour in 2013 winning three tournaments in commanding fashion. The Queenslander is sure to fly the Australian flag proudly again in Asia in 2014 and will shine amongst a strong contingent of Australians.
Turning Pro towards the end of 2013 Nathan is one of Australian golf’s most exciting up and coming talents. Throughout the summer Nathan held his own on course against more experienced rivals missing only one cut and finishing within the top-25 in all his other starts. Off the course Nathan was just as impressive showing composure and confidence beyond his years. Keep an eye out for Nathan in his first full year as a Pro in 2014.
Ok, so we know that he is actually South Korean but in true Aussie fashion we’ve adopted Jin who has spent the past seven years living in Melbourne. 2014 is going to be huge for the 23 year old who, courtesy of winning the Perth International, now has full status on the European Tour. Jin finished runner-up on the 2013 PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit which should also see him get a start in the HSBC Champions tournament for the second year.
It’s been an interesting couple of years for James; he lost his PGA TOUR card at the end of 2011, failed to get it back in 2012 after a blunder with his alarm clock and then last year missed the Web.com Tour Finals series by one spot. But no one likes a challenge quite like James. A serious player with big ambition James will be focused on getting back to the big show in 2014, and we think he might just make it.
Australia’s third highest world ranked player, Marc is ready to claim his second PGA TOUR victory. Earning a captain’s selection into last year’s Presidents Cup team, finishing T4 at the Masters and returning to Australia as a fan favourite in 2013 will have boosted Leish’s confidence supremely. Look out season 2014.
Jack burst on to the scene in 2013 by winning the WA Goldfields PGA Championship and making history as the first PGA Trainee to win a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament. He went on to finish top-3 at the Australian PGA Championship and NSW Open as well as being 5th on the overall Order of Merit; all whilst studying to be a PGA Professional. With his Traineeship now complete Jack no longer needs to split his time between studying, working and playing. Watch this space…
For the first time in his career, the likeable West Australian lost his PGA TOUR card at the end of season 2013. Now a member of the Web.com Tour, we’ll be watching with interest to see how this fierce competitor bounces back over the next 12 months. Working with Ian Baker-Finch to improve his putting, it’s a brave person who writes off Nick this season.
An interesting player who can often slip under the radar, one thing about Steven is for sure; he has serious talent. Bowdo can make birdies like no one else and if he keeps the mistakes to a minimum he has the ability to go super low. Retaining his PGA TOUR card for 2014 Bowditch has found his feet on Tour and is ready to make his mark.
After winning the Amateur Championship in 2011, plenty of people expected big things from Bryden… and it looks like he’s starting to deliver. It’s always hard to adjust to life as a Professional but it looks as though Bryden found his feet at the end of 2013 with a T5 finish at the Gloria Jean’s Coffees NSW Open and a T4 at the Emirates Australian Open. Thanks to his finish at the Australian Open Bryden will compete at The Open Championship in 2014. This will be his second appearance at The Open after competing as an amateur in 2011.
2014 is going to be an interesting season for Robert who is utilising his lifetime money exemption on the PGA TOUR. The Victorian’s last Professional win came at the 2009 Australian PGA Championship at Coolum, but he hasn’t won on the PGA TOUR since 2001. In his last PGA TOUR tournament of 2013 Robert finished T16, his best result in nearly 12 months, and will be hoping this form continues into the New Year.
Racking up a win on the PGA Tour of Australasia in 2012, Matt’s first year as a Professional was impressive. Last season he competed on the Asian Tour with four top-10 finishes and with another year of experience under his belt, could be the next Aussie to dominate on the Asian Tour alongside the likes of Scott Hend.
After claiming the coveted Green Jacket and dominating the 2013 summer of golf in Australia all eyes will be on Adam this year to see if he can claim the World Number 1 position from Tiger Woods. Whilst he continues to play a limited schedule, a win early in the 2014 season should see him go close.
In 2013 Jason returned home and to the winner’s circle at the World Cup of Golf, with a strong showing at the Emirates Australian Open earning a brief return to the world top-10. Now ranked No. 11 the Queenslander will be full of confidence heading back to the PGA TOUR and hungry for another win. Proving a major specialist, in 2013 Jason finished 3rd at the Masters, T2 at the US Open and T8 at the PGA Championship. Could he be Australia’s next Major winner?
