A rollercoaster final round has seen Scott Hend post his first top-10 finish for 2016 at the Dubai Desert Classic.
Hend finished leading Australian at the European Tour event, a four round total of 14-under-par three better than Brett Rumford and four ahead of Wade Ormsby and Nathan Holman.
A final round of 3-under 69 for the big hitting Queenslander was far from straightforward, three birdies and two eagles mixed with two bogies and a double for a T8 finish.
Hend posted four eagles over the course of the week, three of them at the par-5 13th where a birdie in the second round saw him 7-under for that hole alone.
While it was a good week for the 42-year-old it could have been even better, two double bogies marring his scorecard over the 72 holes.
However, known as a confidence player Hend will be one to watch in coming weeks after his first top-10 since September last year.
Hend was one of six Australians to tee up in Dubai, Marcus Fraser and Andrew Dodt both missing the cut after horror opening rounds but the other three all performing well.
Rumford was next best after Hend, the West Australian just one shot off the pace after an opening 67 and going on with the job with rounds of 70-69-71.
It all added up to a T24 finish but the 38-year-old will take a lot of confidence from the consistent play after enduring a painful 2015 which saw him undergo stomach surgery in South Africa.
Rumford admitted over the Australian summer that he wasn’t yet back to full fitness though this week’s performance suggests he is well on track.
Wade Ormsby will also be pleased with his play, particularly a bogey free final round 68 which jumped him 11 places up the leader board.
After missing the cut at last week’s Qatar Masters it was a steady performance, the South Australian dropping only four shots over the 72 holes.
Nathan Holman, too, will take a lot from his week after flirting with the lead over the first two days and notching 19 birdies in his 10-under-par total.
The Australian PGA Championship winner seems to be finding his feet on the Tour after missing the cut in Abu Dhabi and finishing T35 last week.
