One of the nicest traditions of The Masters week and
certainly the most exclusive, is an invitation to the Champions Dinner.
It’s a night for all those to have won a Green Jacket to
gather and celebrate on the Tuesday before the tournament tees off.
The Defending Champion has the honour of placing their flavour
on the evening by choosing the menu.
Over the year’s there has certainly been some memorable
dishes including wiener schnitzel served by Bernhard Langer in 1986, haggis served
by Sandy Lyle in 1989, cheeseburgers, chips and milkshakes from Tiger Woods in
1998 as well as elk and wild boar from Mike Weir in 2004.
More recently, Bubba Watson has served mac and cheese on
both his Masters menus while our own Adam Scott paid homage to Australian cuisine
with Australian steak, Moreton Bay bugs and of course, pavlova.
Jordan Spieth this year has elected to serve a classic Texas
barbecue menu which features beef brisket, pork ribs and smoked chicken.
However the young champion will be less concerned with his
meal choice and more focused on soaking up the atmosphere which can only be
created by having some of the most influential people in golf gathered in one
room.
"It will be
certainly unique. There will be nothing
that I’ve ever done before or will ever do that will match the first time
talking to that audience," said Spieth who admitted to a few nerves.
"I’ve had dinner
with Phil many times and he can hold court, so I think that that will certainly
happen."
"I know Tiger plans
to be there. We’ve got guys, older
champions, as well. I ran into Fuzzy in
the champions locker room. He was a lot
of fun."
"I think the whole
experience will be so unique. I think I’ll be kind of eyes wide open, just
excited to be there."
"I’m really looking
forward to tonight and it’s going to be a great night."
