Off the back of one of the biggest weeks on the golfing calendar, Jason Day has continued his consistent form in the opening round of the RBC Heritage.
Returning to the routine of the regular PGA TOUR season, Day opened his RBC Heritage campaign with a 4-under 67 in a round that produced five birdies.
The only blemish on his card came with a lone bogey on his closing hole, the par-4 18th, to head into round two one shot behind leader, Luke Donald.
However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Queenslander, who nearly missed his round one tee time.
"I played some nice golf. I came out and nearly missed my tee time, there was only one clock. I walked over pretty quickly and hit my first one down the fairway," said Day.
"For the most part I felt good all day. Obviously (18) wasn’t what I wanted to do with how I finished."
"We’ve got three tough days coming up, with Friday and Saturday being probably the toughest. But right now I’m just trying to focus on getting some sleep and trying to improve on that tomorrow."
It’s been an intense month for the World Number 1. Back-to-back wins coupled with the year’s first Major and the weight of a nation hoping for a second green jacket.
Day was naturally disappointed with his final round at Augusta and heading to Harbour Town Golf Links in search of some confidence after a tied 10th finish.
"I wasn’t too pleased with how I was hitting it, especially on Sunday last week."
"I arrived Monday and practiced for about three and a half hours and got a good hitting session in. That helped a lot with the confidence knowing what I needed to do and it showed a little bit today."
"It’s always tough to play the week after a major championship. I did it last year, after The Open Championship, and obviously the Canadian Open."
"Obviously everyone is out here to try to do a job and that’s win. It’s going to be tough competition over the next three days. But once again the weather is going to be a big factor in that. More of a mental grind and physical grind than anything, you’ve just got to keep yourself in it."
The World Golf Rankings are providing good motivation for Day this week; delivering the inspiration needed to keep his game at the level it needs to be to extend the break between himself, Jordan Speith and Rory McIlroy.
"At this point I’ve got to try to extend the gap in the world rankings. My main focus right now is to keep up the good playing, and if I can do that hopefully I’ll get more of a gap between myself and Jordan and Rory."
Other Australians in the field this week at the RBC Heritage include: Stuart Appleby (T15), Marc Leishman (T36), Aaron Baddeley (T36), John Senden (T36, Geoff Ogilvy (T58), Robert Allenby (T86), Ryan Ruffels (T114) and Matt Jones (T119).
