The young West Aussies are exciting fans in Perth as they
lead the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open after the first round.

Playing in the morning field Jarryd Felton, who recorded his first Pro win last year at the NSW PGA, fired 6-under 64 to claim the top spot on the leaderboard.

"I got off to a really good start. The wind started to pick up halfway around but I managed to keep it together which was really nice," said Felton.

"I have played here a lot over the years and it does get very windy, which is normal. I am more used to it than perhaps some of the other guys out there."

Using his local knowledge, Felton believes the key to success at the Western Australian Golf Club this week will be keeping the ball on the fairways.

"I had a bogey on the 7^th which shows the premium on hitting fairways here," added Felton, who made just one bogey in his opening round.

"I missed the fairway and I was pretty dead so I did well to make bogey there and then played pretty solid into the clubhouse."

Playing in the afternoon field, 21-year-old amateur Haydn Barron joined Felton at the top of the leaderboard playing his home course.

"I got off to a good start. I holed a nice putt on two for birdie. I was bogey free today so it was pretty solid; it was very difficult out there in the weather," said Barron, who works in the Pro Shop at Yokine.

"Jordan (Zunic) actually said that’s why I kept holing all the putts because I know the greens. It’s my home track."

Enjoying the support of his colleagues and members, Barron is excited for the next three rounds.

"A couple of the office ladies got into me yesterday and said if I didn’t play well they were going to tell me off. So obviously there is a bit of extra motivation there," added Barron.

"A lot of the club members came out to support me which I really appreciated."

"I am excited; I’m in a good position going into the next few days. Knowing the course so well is obviously going to be a huge benefit and if I can keep my ball striking up I should be right."

Sitting just one shot off the lead are Nick Gillespie and Antonio Murdaca who also played in the afternoon field which was plagued by bouts of heavy rain.

Rounding out the top-5 on the leaderboard on 4-under 66 are Michael Foster, David Wilson, Benjamin Clementson, Gavin Reed and amateur Travis Smyth.

The second round of the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open tees off tomorrow morning at 6.50am with Barron on course at 7.10am and Felton at 12pm.
