O’Reilly gets hot in the desert

Callan O’Reilly has rocketed himself to the top of the TX
Civil and Logistics WA PGA Championship leaderboard, equalling the course
record in Kalgoorlie.

"CallanStarting his day with a bogey didn’t dampen O’Reilly’s spirits as he went on to reel off an eagle and seven birdies to fire 8-under 64, tying the Kalgoorlie Golf Course record set by amateur Min Woo Lee
last year.

"I am really stoked with my round today, I played nicely after a bit of a shaky start," said O’Reilly.

"You don’t like to keep making bogeys. I just stayed patient and capitalised on a lot of opportunities today."

Aware of the challenges the Graham Marsh designed Kalgoorlie layout can throw up, O’Reilly was pleased with his birdie effort on the 17th.

"I feel like my round changed on 17, my 8thhole," added O’Reilly, who was even par until that point.

"I made birdie there. I hit a really nice shot into about five foot and I managed to make that."

"I made a pretty weak bogey there yesterday. I knew it was a bit of a tricky hole so it just kicked me along."

It was a different story for overnight co-leader Lindsay Wilson who struggled with a cold putter but managed to hold onto a share of the lead with an even par round.

"It was a bit of a struggle all day on the greens, I gave myself as many chances as yesterday, I just couldn’t convert them and that’s what it all comes down to," said Wilson.

"It was pretty frustrating, I got through eight holes at even par and then I hit it close on nine and three putted.  I hit it close on 10 and 12 but didn’t take any of them. I thought I had a chance of making a good score today but it didn’t work out."

"I will have all morning tomorrow so I’ll get out on the putting green and build some confidence. That’s really all it was, I was not seeing the putts go in."

Fellow overnight co-leader Andrew Martin also had a horror day in the desert. He fired 7-over the card which plummeted him down the leaderboard to T38.

At even par it will be a long afternoon for Martin as he watches what the cut will be; he is currently sitting on the number.

Nathan Miller had a 1-under 71 today to stay within reach of the leaders while Stephen Dartnall was impressive with his 5-under 67.

Dartnall is joined on the same number by 2014 WA PGA Champion Ryan Lynch who flew to Kalgoorlie from Morocco. Jetlag didn’t seem to be an issue for Lynch who fired 4-under 68 today.

The afternoon field, including overnight co-leader Andrew Campbell, are now on course.
