PGA Professional, Brisbane native and now Director of Golf at the University of Texas Arlington (UTA) Stuart Deane is set to compete against the world’s greatest golfers this week at the 99th PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.
Deane qualified for the prestigious championship by finishing among the low 20 scorers at the PGA Professional Championship last month in Oregon. The event will mark his second appearance at the PGA Championships and his 12th PGA event overall. Deane played in the 2014 event at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.
Deane is scheduled to open the tournament Thursday morning at 9:25pm AEST off the 10th tee in a group that includes 2016 U.S. Open runner-up Shane Lowry from Ireland and Pablo Larrazabal from Spain.
"A great goal would be to finish among the top 30 or 40 and making the cut at the PGA," said Deane.
"The intent is not to just show up, but to actually go there to compete. This will be a great experience for me and it is great for the (UTA) program. There will be three college coaches playing in the PGA Championship and it is great for each of our programs.
"Anytime you can have a program’s coach playing in events like the PGA Championship and the AT&T Byron Nelson, it has a tremendous effect. There is a certain credibility that comes with performing in such prestigious events and it rubs off on the team."
Deane will share the Major experience with one of his students in UTA’s program, freshman Zach Cole who will caddy for the Queenslander at Quail Hollow.
Now in his third year as leader of the UTA golf program, Deane entered the PGA Professional Championship’s final round at Sunriver Resort in a tie for 53rd, but fired a 1-under par 71 to finish the 72 hole event at 3-over par 290 to tie with seven other golfers for 19th place.
He birdied the second playoff hole to earn one of two available spots among the eight golfers.
In May, Deane competed at the AT&T Byron Nelson for the third time in his career. He has made the cut in a PGA TOUR event twice since 2006.
That year, Deane made international headlines by winning a playoff to claim the Trump Million Dollar Invitational. He has also played on the Web.com Tour during his Professional career.
