It’s fitting that the leading Australian money winner on the Web.com Tour was the only one to make the cut in the last full field event of the season, Jamie Arnold showing decent form ahead of the Finals Series which begins next week.
Five Australians had tee times at the Winco Foods Portland Open but only Arnold played all four days, Robert Allenby, Mark Hensby, Steve Allan and Rhein Gibson all failing to qualify for the weekend.
Arnold’s 9-under tournament total was good for a T19 finish and at 52nd on the money list he is comfortably among the 75 who will play for a PGA TOUR card over the coming weeks.
The news wasn’t as good, however, for some of the other Australians.
The important numbers on the money list at the end of the season are 25, 75 and 100 with the top 25 earning promotion to the PGA TOUR while the top 75 play the four tournament Finals Series which will award a further 25 cards.
Those finishing 76th to 100th are automatically qualified for the secondary Tour again next year but Steve Allan, Mark Hensby and Robert Allenby have missed that mark.
All three will be facing a trip back to Qualifying School if they wish to play full time on the Web.com again next year otherwise they will be relying on limited category status and fewer playing opportunities.
Rhein Gibson spent a nervous weekend waiting to see what his final position would be and he has grabbed the second last place in the Finals with an eventual 74th place on the money list.
After missing the cut Gibson’s fate was in the hands of others and at various times over the weekend he fell out of the top 75 however, the final two rounds of the season’s final full field event are always volatile and having survived the cut off Gibson now has a chance to play for a PGA TOUR card.
In 2015 he earned status through the secondary tour finals and after an indifferent year in 2017 will be pleased to have the chance to do so again.
