An 8-under weekend at Kingsbarns and the Old Course has seen Rhein Gibson finish as the leading Australasian at the popular Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
Gibson finished 68-68 at Kingsbarns and St Andrews to get to 10-under for the week, good for a share of 25th position behind winner Tyrrell Hatton.
Earning his place in the field courtesy of his finish on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit in 2016, Gibson made the most of the opportunity picking up a cheque for €36,142.
Only three of the 17 Australasians who began the week made the 54-hole cut, Jason Scrivener next best behind Gibson at 8-under and T47 while Matthew Giles was 3-under and 66th.
Scrivener matched Gibson’s Sunday 68 to move eight places up the leaderboard while for Giles it was a difficult Sunday, the Sydneysider one of only three players to shoot over par in the final round.
Playing alongside Gibson and hitting off the 10th tee, Giles struggled from the outset with three bogeys in his first four holes.
While he made two birdies to make the turn in 37, a double bogey at the first proved too much to overcome and he finished with eight straight pars for a 75.
Wade Ormsby, Scott Hend, Andrew Dodt, Ryan Fox, Aron Price, Brett Rumford, Ash Hall, Todd Sinnott, Stephen Leaney, Stuart Appleby, Sam Brazel, Andrew Evans and Nathan Holman all missed the cut while Marcus Fraser was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard after the second round.
In the coveted teams event Australian cricket legend Shane Warne teamed with New Zealand’s Ryan Fox to finish fifth.
The pair shared the lead after the opening round and was in the mix until the end but couldn’t match the final round fireworks of playing partners Jamie Donaldson and Kieran McManus who blistered the course in 56 strokes.
A 10-under second nine saw them post the best score of the week to win by three from a group of three teams.
