If he can combine his Sunday finish from last week in Las Vegas with his start from each of the last two years in Mexico, Aaron Baddeley will undoubtedly be a factor at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.
If he can combine his Sunday finish from last week in Las Vegas with his start from each of the last two years in Mexico, Aaron Baddeley will undoubtedly be a factor at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.
The four-time TOUR winner has started each of the last two years at the El Camaleon Golf Club with rounds in the mid 60s, both efforts seeing him inside the top-10 through 18 holes.
However, both times he has been unable to sustain the momentum and slipped to mid-field finishes, his best coming in 2015 when he was T37.
After a blistering run home in Las Vegas though, where he was 4-under for his last six holes, the Victorian will have plenty of confidence heading to the first tee in 2017 and will be hoping to parlay that into 72 good holes.
One of five Australasians in the field, Baddeley is the form player in the early part of the new wraparound season but it is New Zealand’s Danny Lee who has the best history at this event.
Lee was T3 in 2015 and after a second round 66 last year was making his way up the leaderboard when he was forced to withdraw.
This week marks Lee’s first start on U.S. soil for the season after teeing up in both Malaysia and Korea where he had mixed results at the CIMB Classic and CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges.
A T7 at TPC Kuala Lumpur suggested Lee’s game was in good shape but he slumped to a tail-of-the-field performance in Korea with weekend rounds of 79-80.
A three week break should have given Lee time to work out any kinks in his game and with five of his last six rounds at El Camaleon in the 60’s he will be keen to get underway.
Greg Chalmers, Geoff Ogilvy and Matt Jones round out the Australasian challenge, both Jones and Chalmers making the journey for the fifth time while Ogilvy is teeing up for just his second.
Jones’ T22 finish in 2008 is the pick of the performances with Ogilvy missing the cut in his only appearance and Chalmers boasting a best of T29 in 2015.
